The section brings together iconic films, presented at Cannes or awarded with Oscars, important milestones in the history of cinema, which have as starting point the work of Shakespeare. From the classic Romeo and Juliet, Franco Zeffirelli's faithful adaptation to the insanity of Godard's King Lear, which upset the criticism of the time and imposed itself as an anti-adaptation.

Shakespeare on the big screen

5 great cinema authors see Shakespeare's work in different ways:

Laurence Olivier sees it as a living material, which cinema can reshape, his lens looking at Hamlet's inner life. Chimes at Midnight, the free and personal adaptation of Orson Welles, chooses Falstaff, a secondary character to Shakespeare, to talk through him about friendship, power, aging, and the breaking up of illusions. Romeo and Juliet remain one of the most beloved love films of history, and one of the bravest decisions Zeffirelli made in 1968 was the distribution of truly young actors: Olivia Hussey (15 years) and Leonard Whiting (17 years), a radical deviation from the previous theatrical and cinematic tradition where Romeo and Juliet were played by actors for 30-40 years. Jean-Luc Godard's King Lear tries to prove that you can NO longer adapt Shakespeare to a fragmented world and imposes the term anti-adaptation. Modern adaptations, through My Own Private Idaho, bring to the Shakespearean structure, queer realism and oniric lyricism, and Gus Van Sant's film talks about abandonment, looking at Falstaff and Henry V.

Romeo și Julieta rămâne unul dintre cele mai iubite filme de dragoste ale istoriei, iar una dintre cele mai curajoase decizii pe care a luat-o Zeffirelli în 1968 a fost distribuirea unor actori cu adevărat tineri: Olivia Hussey (15 ani) și Leonard Whiting (17 ani), o abatere radicală față de tradiția teatrală și cinematografică anterioară, unde Romeo și Julieta erau interpretați de actori de 30–40 de ani. Shakespeare Movies, a cinematic component of the festival, proposes a selection of films that explore William Shakespeare's universe from different perspectives: from classical screenings that have become milestones in the history of cinema, to modern reinterpretations and cinematic experiments. The series of screenings covers nearly half a century of cinema and talks about faithful adaptation, free reinterpretation, and cinema that reflects Shakespearean themes. The selection is curated by Bad Unicorn and presented in partnership with Cinema Inspire. The screenings will take place in Craiova City Hall Square.

Filmele sunt prezentate în Piațeta Primăriei Craiova și în Camera Mov a Teatrului Național „Marin Sorescu” din Craiova, aducând universul shakespearian atât în spațiul urban, cât și într-un cadru intim de vizionare.
