Orkid, the edgy shoegaze trio from Bucharest, describe their style as post-traumatic blues.
Drawing on diverse influences, ranging from punk and garage to post-metal, from indie and blues to math, prog, or even academic music, Orkid has released five studio albums to date: Standing Still in the Dark (2016), Suruaika (2018), Deraiat (2020), In the Light We are Safe (2022), and Noi contra Noi (2023). Since 2018, their music has been produced by Adrian Despot and Sorin Pupe Tănase at VdV Music Studio.
In their 10 years of existence, they have performed over 300 concerts, opening for bands such as: Mogwai (Scotland), Death in Vegas (England), Mono (Japan), Madrugada (Norway), The Underground Youth (England), Lucy Kruger & the Lost Boys (Germany), as well as for the most popular local bands—Vița de Vie, Șuie Paparude, Coma, Subcarpați, The Mono Jacks, Emil, Implant pentru Refuz, etc. They appeared on a TV show on TVR1—Starea Nației, 2019—and on dozens of radio shows—Radio Guerrilla, Tananana, Gold FM, Rock FM, etc.
Since two of the members come from the visual arts field—Vlad is a screenwriter and film director by training, and Radu is an animator and graphic artist—Orkid is a cinematic project that also emphasizes animated visuals, illustration, and design. Urban artist (illustrator, graphic designer, comic book creator, graffiti artist) Pisica Pătrată, aka Alexandru Ciubotariu, joins them at their concerts with live drawing.
In 2022, one of Orkid’s tracks, “Cad,” was featured on the soundtrack of an HBO series (Ruxx), followed by two others (“Stargaze” and “Beasts Apart”) on the soundtrack of a feature film—*The Good Boys Go to Heaven* (Dir.: Radu Potcoavă). In 2018, they composed the entire soundtrack for an animated short film directed by Vlad and Radu—Suruaika
The band’s new single, “Urlă ca marea,” marks the revival (after nearly 10 years) of their collaboration with Andrei Robin Proca (Robin and the Backstabers), the producer of their debut album “Standing Still in the Dark.”
“Urlă ca marea” features a new sound, with a minimalist and forceful aesthetic, describing a latent feeling whose raw power destroys everything in its path when it surfaces. Like a sea in the midst of a storm, like a raging beast.
